Western Novels Books in Order

The Elmore Leonard Western Novels collection represents the early phase of one of America's greatest crime writers — the period before Leonard pivoted to urban crime fiction and became famous for Detroit and Miami thrillers. Elmore Leonard spent the first fifteen years of his writing career producing Western fiction for pulp magazines and paperback publishers, and the skills he developed — spare prose, character-specific dialogue, morally complicated protagonists, and a complete absence of authorial moralising — translate directly from the frontier to the city. These Westerns are, in a real sense, where Leonard's voice was formed.

Leonard's Westerns are distinguished from conventional genre product by the same qualities that define his crime fiction: the villains are often more interesting than the heroes, the "good" characters are rarely purely good, and the violence, when it comes, has weight and consequence rather than existing as exciting spectacle. His frontier Arizona and New Mexico are rendered with historical specificity, and his understanding of the relationships between settlers, ranchers, outlaws, and the law has the complexity of someone who had read deeply in actual Western history rather than consuming movie mythology.

This selection covers 8 novels published from 1953 to 1979, including the well-regarded Hombre (1961, adapted into a Paul Newman film) and Valdez Is Coming (1970). Each is entirely self-contained. Readers who know and love Leonard's crime fiction will find the same voice and craft in miniature here. An ideal companion to the Standalone Crime Novels collection for a complete picture of Leonard's achievement.
