Virgil Flowers Series Books in Order

The Virgil Flowers Series is a witty, sharply observed crime thriller franchise written by John Sandford, set in the rural communities, small towns, and lake country of Minnesota. The series follows Virgil Flowers, a Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator who works under Lucas Davenport (the protagonist of Sandford's longer Prey series) and is sent to handle complex, high-profile cases in outstate Minnesota — meaning everywhere outside the Twin Cities metro. Virgil is a deliberate contrast to his boss: where Davenport is dark, controlled, and urban, Virgil is a laid-back, flannel-shirt-wearing, fly-fishing enthusiast with a gift for talking to people and an investigative approach built on patient observation and country wit.

The rural Minnesota setting gives the series a distinctive atmosphere that separates it from the crowded urban crime fiction market. Sandford has an encyclopedic knowledge of Minnesota's geography, agriculture, lake culture, and small-town social dynamics, and the communities Virgil investigates — farming towns, resort communities, religious enclaves, and university towns — are rendered with specificity and dry affection. The tone is lighter than the Prey series, with genuine comedy woven into the crime plotting, and Virgil's romantic relationships provide warmth and continuity across the books.

Comprising 14 novels from Dark of the Moon (2007) through 2022, the Virgil Flowers series is one of the most consistently enjoyable regional crime franchises in American publishing. It works perfectly as a standalone series, though readers of the Prey books will enjoy the crossover appearances of Davenport. Start with Dark of the Moon for the full character foundation — the rural Minnesota atmosphere is established from the first page.
