Lucas Davenport / Prey Books in Order

The Lucas Davenport / Prey Series is a landmark American crime thriller franchise written by John Sandford. The series centers on Lucas Davenport — a tall, darkly handsome Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigator known for his intelligence, tactical aggression, and complicated personal life. Davenport is not a conventional detective: he is independently wealthy from designing computer games, dresses in expensive clothes, and brings a hunter's instinct to pursuing the most dangerous criminals in the Midwest.

Sandford's writing is notable for its dual perspective — each novel alternates between Davenport's investigation and the killer's point of view, creating a cat-and-mouse tension that makes the Prey books genuinely unsettling. The villains are often intelligent, methodical, and terrifyingly plausible. This psychological realism, combined with Sandford's deep knowledge of Minnesota's geography and culture, gives the series a strong sense of place and authenticity.

Over 34 novels published from Rules of Prey (1989) through 2024, the series chronicles Davenport's rise from Minneapolis detective to BCA agent to U.S. Marshal. His personal life — marriages, children, friendships with cops like Del Capslock and Virgil Flowers — develops organically across the books. The series appeals strongly to fans of Thomas Harris and Michael Connelly who appreciate both procedural rigour and complex characterisation.
