Lord Peter Wimsey Series Books in Order
The Lord Peter Wimsey Series is a cornerstone of Golden Age British detective fiction, written by Dorothy L. Sayers and featuring one of the genre's most fully realised amateur detectives. Lord Peter Wimsey is the younger son of a duke β wealthy, languid, apparently frivolous, with a monocle, a passion for incunabula and old wine, and a gift for detection that he pursues partly to occupy a restless mind still haunted by shell shock from the First World War. His manservant Mervyn Bunter is a former sergeant who serves as both practical assistant and emotional anchor; his friend Charles Parker of Scotland Yard provides the official police connection.
Sayers is a significantly more literary writer than most of her Golden Age contemporaries. Her plots are rigorous β she took the technical puzzle aspects of detective fiction as seriously as any writer of the period β but her real interest is in character and society. Lord Peter's personality deepens and darkens considerably across the series, and his relationship with the crime novelist Harriet Vane (introduced in Strong Poison and central to the series' later volumes) is one of the great romantic arcs in English popular fiction: an extended, complex negotiation between two intelligent people about power, dependence, and equality.
Comprising 11 novels and numerous short stories published from 1923 to 1937, the series culminates in the masterwork Gaudy Night (1935) β set in Sayers's own Oxford college and functioning simultaneously as a detective novel, a love story, and an essay on the life of the mind. An essential series alongside Christie and Allingham for anyone interested in the Golden Age. Best read in order to follow the Wimsey-Vane relationship from its beginning.
