Liveship Traders Books in Order
Liveship Traders Series by Robin Hobb is a trilogy set in the same Realm of the Elderlings world as the Farseer books but in an entirely different region β the Cursed Shores and the Rain Wilds β following different characters and exploring the world through a different social and economic lens. At its center are the liveships: vessels built from wizardwood that become sentient after absorbing the deaths of three generations of the same family.
Hobb's ambition here is extraordinary. She creates a world defined by maritime trade, family obligation, slavery, and the intersection of commerce with the supernatural β the liveships' consciousness creating legal, moral, and emotional complications that no society has frameworks for. The ensemble cast includes a ship captain's family, a pirate king, a slave, and the ships themselves as fully realized characters.
The trilogy is a masterwork of world-building in service of character. Hobb is interested in how people survive within systems that diminish them β family obligation, commercial necessity, chattel slavery β and the Liveship Traders books approach these questions from angles that the Farseer novels, with their palace settings, could not reach.
Begin with Ship of Magic. Farseer familiarity is helpful but not required. For Robin Hobb devotees, this trilogy is equal to the Farseer books in ambition and perhaps superior in scope. Essential reading for anyone serious about literary epic fantasy.
