Flesh and Fire (Prequel) Books in Order

Flesh and Fire (A Light from Embers Prequel Series) by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a dark fantasy romance prequel series set in the world of From Blood and Ash, exploring the origins of the mythology, magic, and conflicts that shape that beloved series. These books answer the questions long-time fans have been asking about how the world of the Chosen came to be and what forces shaped it centuries before the events of the main series.

Armentrout expands her world-building here with characteristic generosity — new characters, new kingdoms, and new dimensions of the magic system that deepen appreciation for everything that comes after. The romance follows her usual pattern: slow-burn tension between characters with complicated histories and genuine obstacles between them.

As prequels, these books are best appreciated by readers who have already invested in the From Blood and Ash world — the callbacks, the foreshadowing, and the reveals land with much greater impact when you know where the story eventually goes. That said, Armentrout ensures the narrative is compelling in its own right.

New to the world? Start with From Blood and Ash first. Returning fans: begin with A Shadow in the Ember and let Armentrout take you back to the beginning of everything. Essential for anyone who loves her world-building and wants to understand it at its deepest level.
