DI Tom Janssen / Norfolk Series Books in Order

The DI Tom Janssen / Norfolk Series by J.M. Dalgliesh brings readers to the windswept coastlines and quiet villages of Norfolk, England, where Detective Inspector Tom Janssen investigates crimes that cut deep into the heart of tight-knit rural communities. The landscape itself is almost a character — moody, isolated, and full of secrets.

Tom Janssen is a thoughtful, methodical detective whose personal history adds layers to his professional life. Dalgliesh excels at creating believable small-community dynamics, where everyone knows everyone and a murder can unravel decades of hidden relationships, old grievances, and buried shame.

The series began in 2019 and has earned strong praise for its atmospheric writing, convincing police procedure, and richly developed supporting cast. Each book features a self-contained investigation while deepening our understanding of Tom and his world. The pacing is deliberate and rewarding — these are books that take their time and are better for it.

If you enjoy British detective fiction with a strong sense of place and characters you genuinely care about, the DI Tom Janssen series is an excellent choice. Begin with the first book and let Dalgliesh transport you to the Norfolk coast. Fans of M.C. Beaton and Ann Cleeves will find much to love here.
