20th Century Boys Books in Order

20th Century Boys is a landmark manga series written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa, widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the history of the medium. The story begins in the late 1990s with Kenji Endo, a convenience store owner who discovers that a mysterious doomsday cult — whose symbol is a hand and eye emblem — appears to be enacting a plan for global destruction based on a secret "Book of Prophecy" that he and his childhood friends created decades earlier as a game. As Kenji investigates, the past and present collide across multiple timelines, and the stakes expand from personal to civilisational.

Urasawa's storytelling operates at a level of structural complexity and emotional depth that places him in the company of literary novelists rather than genre manga artists. His ability to manage dozens of characters across multiple time periods — childhood in the 1960s and 70s, the near-present of the late 90s, and a dystopian future — without losing narrative coherence or emotional clarity is simply extraordinary. The mystery at the series' heart is constructed with the rigour of a masterwork thriller, and the payoff, when it comes, is earned across every page of the journey.

Comprising 22 volumes published from 1999 to 2006, plus the sequel series 21st Century Boys (2 volumes), the complete story is a finished, self-contained masterwork. A live-action Japanese film trilogy adaptation was released between 2008 and 2009. Essential reading for any serious manga reader, and genuinely accessible to readers who have never read manga before. Must be read in order from volume one — the mystery structure depends on it.
