Biography
Violet Sorrengail is the protagonist of Rebecca Yarros's Empyrean series β a young woman who was destined for the Scribe Quadrant due to her fragile physical condition and who instead chooses to enter the Rider Quadrant of Basgiath War College, where she must survive dragons, dangerous classmates, and institutional structures designed to kill students who do not belong. Against all expectations, she bonds with Tairn, the most powerful dragon at the college, which marks her as someone the system cannot afford to dismiss.
Yarros writes Violet's disability β a connective tissue disorder that makes her physically vulnerable β as a genuine fact of her existence rather than an obstacle she simply overcomes. Her intelligence, her preparation, and her ability to think through problems rather than simply outlast them physically give her a distinctive kind of competence that is different from the brute strength most Riders rely on.
The worldbuilding of the Empyrean series β its dragon-bonding mythology, its magic system, and the political structures of Navarre β is developed with the specificity of sustained invention, and Yarros deploys revelations about the world's true nature across the series with considerable skill.
Begin with Fourth Wing (2023) and continue with Iron Flame.
