Biography
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff of Charon County, Virginia in S.A. Cosby's crime novel All the Sinners Bleed β a former FBI agent who won a surprising election and is still negotiating the politics of his position when a school shooting exposes a serial killer operating in his county and sets Titus on an investigation that will challenge every institutional relationship he has. Cosby writes Titus's position with specific attention to the racial politics of a Southern county where his election was both a milestone and a provocation.
Cosby's Charon County is one of contemporary crime fiction's most fully realized settings β the specific social and racial landscape of a rural Virginia county, its history, its current dynamics, and the specific way that institutions like law enforcement are embedded in local power structures give the novel its depth. Titus navigates this landscape with the political intelligence of someone who knows exactly what his badge means in different rooms.
The serial killer investigation is dark and handled with unflinching honesty, but the novel's real subject is the specific weight of being the first β the first Black sheriff, navigating a job that has always been held by people who did not look like him, in a county whose history with people who looked like him is not simple.
A standalone novel.
