The Shadow King (Kallias)

The Shadow King — Kallias — is the enigmatic ruler at the center of Tricia Levenseller's The Shadows Between Us. Surrounded at all times by deadly shadows that protect him from assassination, he has cultivated an aura of untouchable menace that keeps potential enemies at bay. When Charlotte arrives at court with the explicit intention of marrying and then killing him, she discovers that the Shadow King is considerably more perceptive — and more interesting — than she anticipated.

Kallias is one of YA fantasy's most successful morally ambiguous love interests: genuinely dangerous, clearly intelligent, possessed of his own agenda that he pursues with the same ruthlessness Charlotte brings to hers. The slow revelation of who he actually is beneath the shadow-wrapped king persona is the series' central romance engine, and Levenseller gives him enough genuine complexity to make Charlotte's reconsideration of her plans feel earned rather than convenient.
