Sam Vimes

Famous Character Created by Terry Pratchett

Biography

Sam Vimes is the best Discworld doorway for many adult readers. He is the center of the City Watch books, beginning properly with Guards! Guards!. At first, Vimes looks like a tired guard in a city that has learned to live with crime, corruption, guild politics, and daily absurdity. He drinks too much. He expects very little from the world. Then the Watch books begin to ask what law means when the city itself is messy, unfair, and alive.

Vimes gives Discworld a grounded shape. His books often read like detective stories, police procedurals, and civic comedies at the same time. Through him, Pratchett writes about class, anger, power, public duty, and the danger of thinking you are above the rules. That is why Vimes is more than a popular character. He is one of the clearest routes into what Discworld became after the early parody books.

New readers should start with Guards! Guards!. That book introduces the Watch path and gives Vimes a clean beginning. After that, continue through Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch, Thud!, and Snuff. Reading those books in order matters. Vimes changes over time, and the city changes with him. If you want one Discworld route that feels focused and emotionally strong, this is the safest place to begin.
