Livia Lone

Livia Lone is the Thai-American Sex Crimes detective protagonist of Barry Eisler's series — a woman who was trafficked as a child from Thailand to the United States and who survived to become a law enforcement officer dedicated to hunting the men who exploit children. Eisler writes Livia with the same moral seriousness and attention to systemic reality that characterizes his John Rain novels, using the thriller format to engage honestly with child sex trafficking as a global criminal enterprise.

Livia's personal history gives her both exceptional motivation and exceptional damage — she understands the world she investigates from the inside, which makes her uniquely effective and uniquely vulnerable. Eisler handles this material without exploitation, treating the subject's gravity seriously while still delivering the narrative satisfaction of a well-plotted thriller.

The series is distinguished by Eisler's research depth and his political intelligence — Livia's cases connect to the institutional failures and power structures that allow trafficking to persist, and the books do not pretend that individual cases, however successfully resolved, address the systemic problem. A difficult and important series.
