Famous Character Created by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Biography

Daniel Sempere is the heart and primary protagonist of Zafón's 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books' series. We first meet him as a young boy in 1945 Barcelona, when his father takes him to the secret library and allows him to 'adopt' a book: 'The Shadow of the Wind' by the mysterious Julián Carax. This choice dictates the course of his entire life, drawing him into a dangerous web of secrets, love, and historical shadows.

Daniel grows from a curious child into a determined young man, carrying the legacy of the Sempere & Sons bookstore. His loyalty to his friends, especially Fermín Romero de Torres, and his unwavering pursuit of the truth behind the tragedies of the past define his journey. Through Daniel, Zafón explores the profound impact of books on the human soul and the generational weight of memory.
