Stephanie Plum Books in Order

All 30 Janet Evanovich Novels — From One for the Money to Now or Never

Stephanie Plum is a lingerie buyer from Trenton, New Jersey who becomes a bounty hunter because she needs money and her cousin Vinnie owns a bail bond office. She has no training, a terrible track record with cars (most of them explode), and two very different men who probably shouldn't find her attractive. In 30 novels across 30 years, this has not meaningfully changed. That is, in large part, the point.

Start with: One for the Money (Book 1). The Plum series is unusual in that it works partly because the series formula never changes — but it helps to understand the formula from the beginning.

💰 How to Read the Stephanie Plum Series for Less

With over 30 main novels, Stephanie Plum is a major commitment. Here's how to build your collection affordably:

  • The "Multi-Book" Hack (Used Bundles): Because these books are incredibly popular, you can often find Used Book Bundles (Sets 1-10 or 1-20) on Amazon for a fraction of the cost of buying them new.
  • Between-the-Numbers: Don't pay full price for the novellas (like 12.5)! These shorter adventures frequently drop to $0.99 or are included in "Short Story" collections that give you more bang for your buck.
  • Audible Escape: If you prefer audiobooks, the Stephanie Plum series is a perfect "credit saver" on Audible as they are often included in the Plus catalog.
  • Pro Tip: For even more ways to save on digital series, see our guide to Mastering the Digital Stack.
  • Libby / OverDrive: Most libraries have the entire series in multiple formats. Pro tip: if the audiobook has a long wait, try the ebook—the faster reading speed means the line moves quicker.
  • Kindle Daily Deals: Janet Evanovich is a "Daily Deal" regular. If you're patient, you can often snag the first 10 books for $2.99 or less during promo weeks.

Do the Stephanie Plum Books Need to Be Read in Order?

More than most long-running mystery series: yes, start from Book 1. Here's why: the Stephanie Plum series has what fans call a "will they, won't they" romantic triangle — Stephanie, detective Joe Morelli, and the mysterious security consultant Ranger — that runs for 30 books without resolving. Reading out of order doesn't ruin the mystery plots (each case is self-contained), but it reduces the romantic tension to background noise rather than the slow-burn it's designed to be.

That said, the formula is genuinely stable from Book 1. Stephanie will lose a car. Grandma Mazur will do something outrageous at a funeral home. Lula will be excessive. Morelli and Ranger will both be available and impossible. If you dip into any book after Book 5, you'll follow the plot — you'll just miss the accumulated weight of that triangle.

What Kind of Series Is This?

Stephanie Plum is firmly in the "humorous mystery" or "cozy mystery" tradition — except less cozy and more chaotic. The violence is real but brief; the comedy is the point. Evanovich's formula is built on escalation: the situation always gets worse before Stephanie stumbles into a resolution she didn't engineer. Think of it as the literary equivalent of a TV sitcom with an unusual setting.

Setting
Trenton, New Jersey — specific, unglamorous, and used with affection
Tone
Broad comedy, running gags, slapstick — not dark, never gritty
Reading speed
Fast — most books read in 4–6 hours. Short chapters, propulsive pace
The big question
Morelli or Ranger? After 30 books, still unresolved. Evanovich has confirmed this is intentional.

Between-the-Numbers Books

Evanovich has also published "Between the Numbers" novellas — shorter stories set between the main numbered books, usually focused on holiday events. These are optional and not required for the main series arc. They include Visions of Sugar Plums, Plum Lovin', Plum Lucky, and Plum Spooky. Read them if you want more Stephanie; skip them if you want to move through the main series faster.

The Short Version

Start with One for the Money. Read in order for maximum romantic tension. Each book takes a weekend. If you want the full list with between-the-numbers novellas included, visit the Janet Evanovich author page for the complete, annotated sequence.
