About the Author
Veronica Roth is an American novelist best known for the Divergent trilogy, a hugely successful young adult dystopian series that became a global phenomenon. Born in New York City in 1988, Roth grew up in the Chicago suburbs and studied creative writing at Northwestern University. She wrote the first draft of Divergent during winter break of her senior year, and the novel was published in 2011 when she was just twenty-two years old.
The Divergent series is set in a future Chicago where society is divided into five factions based on personality traits: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), Amity (peacefulness), and Candor (honesty). The story follows Beatrice 'Tris' Prior, who discovers she is 'Divergent'βshe doesn't fit neatly into any one factionβand must navigate a society on the brink of civil war. The series is celebrated for its fast-paced action, its exploration of identity and belonging, and its willingness to make bold, controversial narrative choices.
The trilogy was adapted into a successful film franchise starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James. Roth has since written additional works set in the Divergent universe, as well as new series including the Carve the Mark duology and the Chosen Ones. She is known for her thoughtful engagement with her readers and her exploration of themes including courage, sacrifice, and the nature of identity. She lives in Chicago.
