About the Author
Tahereh Mafi is an Iranian-American author born in 1988 and raised in a small town in Connecticut. She is the author of the Shatter Me series, one of the most popular YA dystopian series of the 2010s, which she began writing in her early twenties and published to immediate commercial success beginning in 2011.
The Shatter Me series follows Juliette Ferrars, a girl whose touch is lethal β she has been locked away by a totalitarian regime that wants to weaponize her ability. The series combines dystopian world-building with a deep focus on its protagonist's psychological state, narrated in a distinctive stream-of-consciousness style with crossed-out text that externalizes Juliette's self-censorship and suppressed thoughts. The technique was immediately recognizable and became one of the series' most discussed qualities.
What began as a trilogy β Shatter Me, Unravel Me, and Ignite Me β expanded into a six-book series and then beyond, with novellas and additional volumes responding to the fanbase's passionate engagement with the characters, particularly the love triangle involving Warner, one of YA fiction's most discussed romantic leads of the decade.
Mafi has also published Furthermore and Whichwood, a middle-grade fantasy duology with a completely different tone and aesthetic β whimsical, vibrant, and fairy-tale-inflected β demonstrating her range as a writer. She is married to fellow YA author Ransom Riggs.
