About the Author
Suzanne Collins is an American author and television writer best known for The Hunger Games trilogy, one of the most successful and influential young adult series ever published. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1962, Collins grew up in a military family, an experience that profoundly shaped her understanding of war and its impact on ordinary peopleβthemes that run throughout her work. She began her career as a writer for children's television, working on shows for Nickelodeon, before transitioning to novels.
The Hunger Games, published in 2008, introduced readers to Katniss Everdeen and the dystopian world of Panem, where children are forced to fight to the death in a televised spectacle designed to maintain the Capitol's control over its subjugated districts. The series is celebrated for its unflinching exploration of themes including survival, propaganda, the ethics of violence, and the corrupting nature of power. Collins's writing is immediate and visceral, placing readers directly inside Katniss's perspective with a tense, present-tense narrative style that proved enormously influential on the YA genre.
The trilogy was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide. Collins returned to the world of Panem in 2020 with the prequel novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which was also adapted into a successful film in 2023. The Hunger Games remains one of the best-selling book series of all time, with over 100 million copies sold globally. Collins lives in Connecticut.
